Engraved title pages

The illustrations are signed by Selby, Jardine, E. Lear, and R. Mitford

"Some of our co-operators having expressed a desire to be freed from their connection with these illustrations, it is now proposed to conclude this series with the present number, but a new series will be continued, upon our own resources."--From a printed leaf bound in at the end of v. 3, captioned "Note" and signed "W.J.--P.I.S."

The new series (with plates marked "n.s."), sometimes referred to as v. 4 of this set, was issued in parts between 1836 [or 1837?] and 1843

The text is unpaged

Two engraved plates are included for each plate number, one being hand-colored and the other without coloring. There are a total of 308 numbered plates, arranged as follows: v. I, plates 1-55; v. 2, plates 56-110; vol. 3, plates 106-136, 139-151

"Note to the binder: by mistake, there are five duplicate numbers ... viz. 106*, 107*, 108*, 109*, 110*; and numbers 137[dagger] and 138[dagger] are omitted"--P. [1] of the index to v. 3

Plate 93 is incorrectly numbered as 94

extracted picklist

SCNHRB and CHMRB have one copy each (the CHMRB copy is incomplete)

SCNHRB copy (v. 1, 39088007330921; v. 2, 39088007141922; v. 3, 39088007271133) has stamps: 1. (embossed) Smithsonian Institution National Museum; accession no. added in pencil: 165359; 2. (ink) Lenox Library, New York. Duplicate. There are some ms. annotations throughout

SCNHRB copy has plate no. 135 misnumbered as "138", with the number corrected by hand; the colored version of the plate for 136 is correctly numbered, but the uncolored version is misnumbered as "137"

SCNHRB copy of v. 1 has modern green buckram library binding with gilt-lettered spine; v. 2-3 have half-leather bindings with marbled paper boards and gilt-tooled spines, and are each housed in an archival paperboard box for preservation

CHMRB copy (selected portions from v. 1-3 bound together in 1 v., 39088014683809, 29 cm. tall) is imperfect: the title leaves are wanting, as are all of the uncolored versions of the plates. The CHMRB composite volume includes the plates and accompanying textual descriptions for no. 1-65, 121-141 (the plate for no. 142 is wanting, although the text is present), and 143-151, only. Plate no. 111 [Trichoglossus haematodus; hand-colored, with a single figure of the bird] is misbound at the end of the volume, and lacks the textual description; in the SCNHRB copy, the hand-colored version of no. 111 also features a single figure of the bird, while the uncolored version shows two figures of the bird

CHMRB copy has inserted at the end of the volume: "Directions for preserving and preparing birds" ([1] p.), signed "Packages or communications may be addressed to Sir W. Jardine ... or P.J. Selby ...," with a recipe for "arsenical soap" printed at the bottom of the page. This leaf is not present in the SCNHRB copy, and it is not known whether it was generally issued with the publication

CHMRB copy has a ms. pencil annotation on the front paste-down endpaper: The Misses Hewitt; accession no.: 2415

CHMRB copy has a modern brown half-cloth binding with marbled paper boards, gilt-tooled spine, and marbled edges; with binder's stamp on front free endpaper: Bound by Bailer Bros. N.Y
